Objectives
The Bio-Art project will develop a complete technological chain for manufacturing functionalised biomaterials for total arthroplasty implants. The project objective is to demonstrate the feasibility at lab scale of the innovative technologies consisting of: •a new Ti bioalloy with superior mechanical properties (low elastic modulus, high wear and corrosion resistance, tensile strength and hardness), coated with •hard yet tough biocompatible multielement carbonitride coatings for the mobile parts of the joints (low friction, wear and corrosion rate - L3), and •doped hydroxyapatite (d-HAP) for advanced osseointegration of the stem metallic parts inserted in the bone during the cementless total arthroplasty surgery.
The specific project objectives are:
Objective O1 – Defining the requirements for:
• total arthroplasty (TA) implant biomaterial,
• bioalloy and coated bioalloy fabrication technologies;
• bioalloy and coating characterization and testing methods.
Objective O2 – Development of laboratory technology for Ti-10Nb-10Zr-5Ta bioalloy;
Objective O3 – Development of d-HAP and L3 coating technologies.
Objective O4 – Validation by in-vitro and in-vivo tests of the technological chain (lab. S-TM-P and SF-PVD technologies) for the new TA implant biomaterial manufacturing.
Objectives O5 – O5.1: Allocation of innovative scientific results to the contributing partners; protection of RTD project results; O5.2: Dissemination of scientific results; O5.3: Project management.
